Faixa Preta 2018 was huge for North Shore
From one year to the next…
Faixa preta is the Brazilian Portuguese for black belt. Before we look ahead to 2019 its worth thinking about some key events from 2018.
Faixa Preta
Our training partner and brown belt, Elliot, was awarded his black belt in April. Elliot paid a visit to his old teacher in Liverpool. Many will know that Elliot used to train with Tony Bebbington in Liverpool. Tony promoted Elliot to black belt with the authorisation of Mauricio Gomes.
Surfjitsu
Following on from Elliot’s promotion to black belt it was Nick’s turn. Nick organised a surfjitsu camp in May featuring Mauricio Gomes and Tom Barlow. As a result professor Kev Capel chose this opportunity to promote Nick to black belt. This occasion was particularly poignant as Nick was promoted at Koncept gym, the location of his first ever BJJ class. Similarly, as Mauricio and Kev were in town, it was time for a few more promotions. Completing the big grading were belts for Sam Wilde, Reece Hughes, Kyle Jordan, Mark Lomax, Richard Marshall, Dan Townley, Dan Smith, Aaron Sleeman and Steve Gawthorpe.
The G.O.A.T.
The surfjitsu camp held its own surprises for the visitors. None other than Roger Gracie made a surprise appearance to the surprise of the attendees on Saturday morning. following on was a fantastic weekend of surfing, seminars from Roger, Mauricio, Tom and Chelsea Barlow. A surfjitsu weekend wouldn’t be complete without a BBQ provided by our top chef and blue belt Grant Goodson. Washing down the weekend with refreshments from Korev beer and Acai from Acai and co.
We enjoyed a record-breaking heatwave of a summer. This meant that a lot of students joined us for after-training cool-down swims at the beach outside the gym.
2019
Finally we can look forward to the year ahead. Certainly we will be looking to organise some more surfjitsu camps. We have some great structure in place for all our classes. Consequently we hope to grow our club membership. Many of our students will be testing themselves around the UK and further afield on the competition scene. Results will flow in and be acknowledged.
